This past weekend I had a nice couple from NC Brian & Wanda Grice. Wanda being the nice wife that she is gave this to t her husband as Christmas gift. On day one we headed to Blue Lagoon for a day of fishing for Peacock bass. Well my favorite weather girl lied to me , Julie said there was going to be no rain until late afternoon. Well needless to say she was wrong, and got drenched. The wind and rain never let up the entire day.   Brian started thing off with a Mylan cichlid, and Wanda catching her first peacock bass.   With the wind blowing strong we headed to the canals. the water was cleaner and the fishing was better. By noon and totally soaked we went to Sonia’s for a great Cuban lunch. Now on day 2 , it was a totally different day it was beautiful no wind and mostly sunny and a high of 84 degrees. Thing started out with the same as yesterday with the couple on their first cast catching these 2 nice fish Brian with a nice 6 lb Bass and Wanda with a peacock Bass over 4 lb. 19.5 “. They caught several peacock & largemouth bass Brian even battled a huge blue cat. The great thing about fishing South Florida it’s the only place you can catch both species on the same trip. After the 2 Days of fishing Brian caught the biggest Largemouth and Wanda catching the biggest Peacock Bass which she is mounting as this was her biggest fish she ever caught. After they battled these peacock bass they are looking to join me this fall in The Amazon. So get out of the cold and join me this winter and see what all the talk is about with these hard fighting Bass.

Today was kind of special for me, I took out my youngest angler in 25 years of guiding. Kai just turned 3 on Nov 15 and handled himself like a Little  Pro for 4 hrs. Pictures here is Myself and Kai holding his first Peacock Bass he caught himself on the first shiner.   As the day went on his courage built up to touching, then holding the fish by himself.   Pictured here is Clay Barker his daughter Ashley visiting for the holiday from South Africa and his Grandson Kai . Clay is the Director of Operations of “Fish to make a Difference” which I am proud to now be a member of. This is a non profit organization where we take children with cancer from the Joe DiMaggio Hospital out fishing . The goal for me is to put a smile on their faces and take them away from the daily routine of treatments they must to go through. God bless these Children. At the end of this day the family caught over 20 fish mostly Peacock Bass a few Mylans and some Largemouth Bass.

The past three days I had return client Nelson Whitlock and his buddy Jason Waters from Delaware. Day 1 – We headed out to Miami for Peacock Bass Nelson stared the day off with two peacock bass, while Jason’s first was a Snook ,then a largemouth and next a Peacock bass to earn him a in-shore Grand Slam. By 11:30 the boys were hungry and tired from a later flight the night before and with 29 fish in the boat they thought it would be time for lunch. After another great lunch at Sonia’s and being exhausted they only fished a short time and catching another 3 peacock ‘s make a total of 32 , which made for a great banner day of fishing plus catch 5 different species.   Day-2 was an exceptional day as we fished The Everglades catching over 50 bass up to 6.10 LB. Most of the bass were caught on Gambler EZ swimmers any dark color and ace baits. The other were caught on spinner baits and jerk baits. Even I caught a nice one trying to stay out of their way, when the bites on it’s on.   Day 3 – With the amazement of how hard the peacock bass fight they wanted more action so off to another fishing hole for peacock bass. Surprising enough they caught 14 Largemouth and 9 peacock bass . “BUT” what made this a great Day for Nelson , was ay 9:40 am he hooked into the fight of his life and he circled the boat 4 time before landing his Trophy 5.10 LB. Male Butterfly Peacock Bass which made his trip. Nelson stated this fish fought more then his 9 LBer. he caught with me 4 years ago on Lake Okeechobee. Well needless to say the boys will be joining me next year in “The Amazon” for the monster 20 LB. Peacock bass. I am already taking reservations for next year. Return clients Keisuke and Miku Ota from Japan came down for 4 great day’s of fishing. Day 1 was focused on snakehead they were successful in catching 3 up to 58 cm plus peacock bass a largemouth . They were using top water plastics from Japan. I think Miku is the most colorful dressed angler I have ever seen   Day 2 Peacock Bass – 9 Peacock bass were caught plus a Mylan all on jerk baits and one on top water.   Day 3- Largemouth in The Everglades, What a great day K and myself had as Miku opted to shop at The Sawgrass Mall from 10 AM-10-PM.     We landed over 40 bass not to count the ones we missed. The bait of choice was Gambler’s EZ swimmer, and a few on an Ace (sanko) . we had 6 Bass over 4 LB. with the biggest at 6 lb. On Day 4 they decided for  Peacock Bass to end this great trip of many fond memories and photos. This couple caught 11 peacock bass some largemouth a Mylan and K got a bonus by catching 2 Jacks’s. Then on the very last cast of the trip Miku hooked in to and landed this beauty which was the biggest of the trip.   We also had a great lunch at Sonia’s, for an excellent Cuban  cuisine  I have to say Miku was a real trouper after getting hooked 3 times and she got K back 1 time. This has to be a record , I have to say that Bill Dance method of hook removal really works as I had taken one from the one from the thigh and one from the face. Keisuke has been a client for the past 10 years and has join me twice in The Amazon where his biggest was 19 LB..

Today was a tough day in The Glades for repeat client and friend Ike Wyant from Iowa and myself , due to blue bird sky’s, a lot of sun and no wind.   Even though the number weren’t there the quality was. We still managed a 20 + lb. bag. up to 7 lb. The bigger bass were caught on Gambler’s Big EZ in the pads, and the others on a Boyd Duckett top water lure working fast across the top on the edge of the pads.   Even with 90 degree weather you can still catch quality bass in Florida with “The Hawghunter” Capt.     In the past two day’s the Peacock Bass fishing has been good. First up I had a Father and Son team Mike & Graham Cole from North Florida. They wanted only to fish with lures, so that’s what we had done catching 10 including some largemouth and a cichlid.   The peacock’s were all caught on Castaic and Reaction Strike jerkbaits which was the lure of choice while we were film the TV show Bass Dr. which will air on WFN this winter.   The action started as soon as the sun broke through the clouds, as Graham started things off. Mike struggled in the beginning, setting the hook in the morning, but that afternoon was things were better for him.   Next day I had a great couple referred to me by a family member a repeat client of mine. Mike and Crissie Gordon from California. This couple just destroyed the Peacock Bass pitching live bait deep. This was celebrating their 15 th anniversary , and in  less then 4 hrs. managed to put 26 peacock bass into the boat up to over 4 LB. caught by Crissie. It’s clients like these that makes my job enjoyable. Come on down and see what all the talk is about , with catching Peacock Bass, pound for pound the strongest fighting freshwater fish.
